Chapter 55

“You all probably remember Carl from the Art of Door County gallery,” I introduced. “He’s in charge of the men who will be hanging the quilts.” Carl waved his hand. “If anyone wants to help Carl with that, please let him know. The men did a fine job last year.”

“Thanks, Claire,” Carl yelled.

“Now, just a reminder: Quilts go up at six in the morning and come down at four,” I stated. “Cher, my partner in crime, is in charge of PR and getting us enough quilts. Do you have anything to add, Cher?”

“I really could use more help, especially getting out flyers and such. We do have a fun addition this year. There will be a cherry pie contest held by Seaquist Orchards on the side of Noble Park. This will draw a lot of people by itself when they see the prize money involved.” Many people clapped at this news.

“Thanks, Cher,” I said graciously. “We’re pleased to have the following vendors this year: Barn Door Quilts, Rachael’s Barn Quilts, and Jacksonport Cottage. Wave your hands, ladies. We hope to have quite a few entries in the Quilted Cherries challenge that will be hung in the park, as well as the award-winning cherry tree quilt by Lee Sue Chan. Thank you, Lee!” She blushed and smiled.

When I concluded the meeting and reminded everyone that the cookies came from Anna’s Bake Shop in Baileys Harbor, many of them crowded around to ask questions. Marta, especially, was overwhelmed. Many of them also stayed to enjoy the refreshments.

“You girls have got this!” complimented Rachael. “I wish I could be more help, but I’m swamped with the wedding and all. By the way, boxes of merchandise have been coming in that you ordered for the gift shop. I hope you realize that after the wedding we have to do some serious rearranging for all your ideas.” I nodded and laughed. “Of course, Harry and Kent can help with that as well.”

“I sure hope so!” I said, feeling relieved.

“Hey, Claire, are you going to Bayside with us?” Carl asked, standing next to Cher.

“Thanks, Carl, but I need to tie some things up with Marta and head home.”

“Okay, then. Good meeting,” Carl said as the two turned away to leave.

I waited until Marta was free to discuss some things with her.

“So, Marta, were you surprised to see Greta here tonight?”

“I was! I really don’t know how you talked her into it. I just hope she doesn’t start telling me what to do.”

“Don’t be nervous about that. I gave her a monitoring job, so she should stay out of your hair. I just hope she isn’t terribly rude to anyone. Do you need anything to do your job?”

“No, not right now. We’re in good shape with last year’s supplies.”

“That’s good to hear. We could use more sponsors, but Cher’s working on that. Be sure to thank Anna for the cookies. They were a big hit!”

We both looked at our watches and saw it was ten o’clock. Time to go home.
